How read time calculated in word counter?
Reading time is an estimate of how long a typical silent reader would take to finish your text. This Word Counter uses a simple words-per-minute model so the result updates instantly as you type or upload a file.
Reading time formula
Reading minutes = ceil(word count ÷ 200)Example: 400 words → ceil(400 ÷ 200) = 2 minutes. Any non-empty text shows at least 1 minute.
200 words per minute
The estimate assumes about 200 WPM for silent reading — a common average for online articles and drafts. Spoken narration is usually slower.
Rounded up
Partial minutes are rounded up with ceil(), so 201 words counts as 2 minutes rather than just over 1.
Empty text
If there are zero words, reading time is shown as 0. As soon as there is at least one word, the minimum displayed time is 1 minute.
Supported languages & file types for upload
Paste or type text in any language your browser can display. Uploads are limited to plain-text formats so the counter can read the file safely in your browser — no account required.
Languages
Works with English and other languages that use spaces between words (and most Unicode text). Counts are based on whitespace-separated tokens, so results are most accurate for space-delimited writing.
Supported upload types
Upload .txt, .md, .csv, .json, .log, or .text files. Binary formats like PDF, DOCX, or images are not supported — export or copy the text first.
File size limit
Keep uploads under 2 MB. Larger drafts can still be pasted directly into the editor.
Processed in your browser
File contents are read locally with the browser File API so you can count words without converting the document elsewhere.
